Alichbrae Shetland Ponies was founded by Stevie and Jackie Mckay in 2006, and latterly our daughter Kirsty who is now heavily involved in the future development of the stud. The love for the Shetland pony was evident for many years with myself ( Stevie ) learning to ride on a Shetland pony in the early 60’s. I was fortunate enough to work in Shetland on and off for over thirty years and I always enjoyed looking at the ponies when I was there, particularly in the north Isles Yell and Unst where there always seemed to be an abundance of ponies.
My base while in Shetland was primarily between Bixter and Aith where my friends to this day still live. During my working life it was difficult to establish a stud of ponies as my work always took me away from home and therefore the practicalities of running a stud of ponies and helping to develop a business as well as raising a family was an impossibility. However, I always said that I would start a stud of ponies when I had more time and therefore Alichbrae Shetland ponies was then born in 2006. The stud is based on both Scottish and English bloodlines which for us is an interesting mix, these are North Wells, Kerswell, Blacketor and Buxted and one or two others. The stud is fairly mixed in colour but we have a passion for roans as they change colour so many time during the year hence why we have several within the stud.
The stud consist of approximately 20/30 ponies which are bred here in lovely Strathearn close to the town of Crieff, the studs aim is to produce a stud of high quality miniature Shetland ponies which will ultimately make its own stamp here at home as well as abroad..
